Skin Care for Each Decade

What to do when

Your skin has its own chronological age which may or may not coincide with your real age. Determined first of all by the genes you inherit, it is also affected by your lifestyle, your state of health and, of course, how much sun- exposure you have had over the years. Too much sun combined with years of hard living, for example, can add 10 or 12 'years' on to the life of your skin. Common sense and a careful skincare routine, on the other hand, can subtract them. But it means starting early. Preferably in childhood.

Teens

With the exception of the first four months in the womb, puberty is the time of greatest development and growth. Even the eyeballs expand under the onslaught of new and rising hormone levels in the blood. These levels can hardly fail to have an effect on the skin. Acne, accompanied by oily, shiny skin and greasy hair, is a major teenage problem, which affects boys and girls alike. Fortunately, much can be done to improve acne. It is also essential to observe scrupulous hygiene. If you have acne or tendency towards oiliness, wash the skin twice daily(kemara Grapefruit Cleanser ), apply a medium- strength astringent (Kemara Balancing Mist ) (strong astringents may stimulate rather than inhibit oil production) and use a good moisturizer.(Balancing Carrot Lotion). This is also the time not to take up smoking. After sunlight smoking is one of the principle causes of early wrinkles and lifeless skin.

Twenties

This is a time of experimentation and change and an age at which you have to make many crucial decisions about how you want to live. Career.... marriage.... children? It is also a time when your hormone levels are still high and when your oil and sweat glands may be even more active than they were in your teens. Acne and oily skin may continue in to your twenties or they may disappear as your hormone levels settle and your skin becomes less sensitive to them. Alternatively acne may appear for the first time. Unlike teenage acne, which is inflammatory and red and extends over cheeks, chin and forehead, twenties acne, tends to take the form of small, scaly, red spots around the mouth and on the chin. Thirties

This is the one of the most demanding phase of your life. You may be looking after a family and young children , managing a household, pursuing a career, or doing all three at once: responsibilities which may need you to neglect your skin. Don't what you do or fail to do, now may seem insignificant but will certainly affect your skin's ability to weather the years later on. You may have already noticed some early signs of ageing. As the rate of cell division and replacements falls off by 50 percent between the age of 35 and 80, accompanied by an increasing tendency for the old cells on the surface of the skin to cling there for a bit longer, You should compensate for the slowdown by exfoliating regularly kemara Regenerative Exfoliate The oil glands also step down their production of sebum at this time. Where once your skin glistened because of the extra oil on your face, it may now be dry and dull. Be awake to this. The skin does change and your skin care routine should adapt likewise.

Forties

By now your age will certainly be showing some effects on your skin. But how dramatically will depend on your own genetic- make up and how much sun exposure you have had. If your skin is showing the results of over enthusiastic sunbathing in early life, remember that all damage caused by sunlight is cumulative and it is still not too late to protect it from further damage. With the approaching menopause, the hormonally responsive sebaceous glands begin to shrink in size and to produce less oil, with the result that your skin may become dry and prone to flaking. Everything you put on to the skin now, whether cleanser, sunscreen or make up, should put something back.
